CDFB00492. 18 June 1981. Letter from M.R. Dare, Director General, Security Service to Bob Kaplan, Solicitor General.
Dare wrote to Kaplan about the struggle to get Feather Bed material back from Lawrence. RCMP files were thoroughly searched throughout 1980 before Lawrence was approached about the missing material. On 24 February 1981, Lawrence called Dare confirming he was in possession of the documents and wished to retain them for his own purposes. Dare and the Commissioner agreed that the material should not be held outside the Ministry, and that Lawrence had no authority to retain it. This was confirmed by a legal opinion from the Department of Justice. On 3 April 1981, the material was returned, thirteen months after Lawrence left the office of Solicitor General.
