5 December 1966: Washington, DC to External Affairs- Johnson / McNamara Press Conference
The Canadian Embassy in Washington wrote to inform Ottawa about a recent press conference during which Robert McNamara, the Secretary of Defense, had confirmed that no decision had been made on the deployment of ABMs.
Embassy officials also passed along prepared questions and answers drafted by the State Department, in anticipation of American press questions on ABMs. These remarks stated that Canada-U.S. discussions on the issue had been relatively broad, and had focused on both the status of U.S. ABM progress and the potential implications of deployment.
This appears to represent the most substantial form of communication between Washington and Ottawa, other than the U.S. briefing, on the topic of ABMs.
