14 March 1967: Memorandum for the Minister - Implications of ABM Deployment for Canada

In this memorandum for the Prime Minister, Mr. Cadieux wrote that “we have received the first indication of the degree to which the US would expect CAD involvement if they decided to deploy an ABM defence.” In particular, Cadieux noted that while interceptions of Soviet warheads targeting the U.S. would likely take place over Canadian territory, major fall-out issues were unlikely due to the height of any such engagement.

Cadieux and SSEA Paul Martin Sr. recommended that Prime Minister Pearson follow up with President Johnson to seek greater clarity about the implications of any ABM deployment.
