30 April 1969: Smith to Bow - CBS Report on ABMs

As in the mid-1960s, Canadians were once again forced to gather information on ABMs through the American media, as opposed to directly communicating with the Americans. After a CBS television report on the Safeguard System, G.J. Smith wrote to Mr. Bow, and informed him on the finer points of the Safeguard debate in the United States. Smith noted that a major Canadian line of thought on the subject – that Safeguard deployment was a result of the military-industrial complex – was partly substantiated by Mr. York, the predecessor of John Foster as the Pentagon’s top technical expert.
