16 May 1962: HYDRA Roadblock

The incident with Tait required some smoothing over. P.D. Smith (Sigs) telegrammed Col. J.B. Clement, informing him that External Affairs was going to write to the Foreign Office “to clarify any misunderstanding.” But Smith clarifies that connecting HYDRA to the STRAD will change very little in terms of message handling procedures or speed, and that “Foreign Office traffic … will not suffer or be in competition with internal Canadian army messages.” Smith also notes that a visit from the British engineer, Robin, would be fine, “but it’s too early to show him any equipment.”
