CDIW00022. 7 July 1955. Letter to George Ignatieff from G.G. Crean
This letter from G.G. Crean to George Ignatieff of External Affairs discussed the American response to the Anglo-Canadian alerts proposals. Crean informed Ignatieff that Patrick Dean had raised the issue with the Americans during his visit to New York a few weeks ago. While Livingstone Merchant of the State Department was optimistic about coming to an agreement, CIA representatives gave the impression that the agency “was not very favourably disposed.” Crean told Ignatieff that several weeks had passed since the Canadian ambassador raised the issue with the Americans and he asked whether it would be useful to ask the State Department when the Canadians might expect a reaction.
