Memorandum for the Minister, "Interception of Soviet Plane over France by Canadian Fighter Aircraft."

April 7th, 1953. This memorandum brought Secretary of State for External Affairs Lester Pearson up to date on the incident. It described the events detailed in the two documents, above. It also informed the Minsiter that  the Canadian Embassy in Moscow sent word to Ottawa that the US Embassy in Moscow had informed the Canadian diplomats there of the incident (CDEX01160). On March 25, the Americans asked, if the Canadians were approached by the Soviets about the incident, that they should in no way blame the US for it. The Canadians noted in the memorandum how nervous the Americans seemed about possible repercussions for the interception.
