On March 13, 1953, an RAF Lincoln Bomber was shot down by the Soviets over the Hamburg-Berlin air corridor, killing seven British airmen. This event precipitated discussions concerning the role of Canada as a non-occupying power in Europe. This included the question of the potential deployment of RCAF squadrons in European airspace. This attack also led to British and Soviet debate as to which side was responsible for firing first. However, the British strongly argued that it was impossible for the Lincoln to use its ammunition since no cartridge belt was found in the wreckage.
