October 28 - October 30 (UN Intervention)

In the immediate aftermath of the crisis, plans were made for the United Nations to play an inspection role. In a cable sent to Canadian Naval Headquarters on October 28th, the Canadian Commander of the Maritime Forces Atlantic, Vice Admiral Kenneth Dyer, noted a joint Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Canadian Air Force study on the possibility of Canada participating in a UN force for Cuban quarantine. The study assumed the role would last over three months (CDNW12378).

Canada’s proposed role would have been convoluted. Canada was prepared to provide aircrew for photo reconnaissance over Cuba. However, the Canadian aircrew would fly American RF101 planes with United Nations markings (CDNW12243). This plan was only tentative: the US stated that they would “consider this offer” depending on how negotiations with Fidel Castro went (CDNW12243).
