CDKW00260 - Appeasing Allies

In this January 1951 memo with text from Pearson, the difficulties of decision-making between the Americans and the more hesitant Indian and Iranian delegations were revealed to the Prime Minister. Benegal Narsing Rau, the Indian delegate to the UN Security Council, worried about signing on to early American drafts which mentioned Formosa and “international obligations” that the Indian government was not comfortable with committing to at the moment. Nasrollah Entezam, the Iranian ambassador to the United States, seemed more amenable to these inclusions, yet Pearson was not certain of his support. Although Pearson did not want to push the issue too strongly, depending on “the strength of United States feeling here,” the Canadians still wanted to push for a carefully worded document capable of attaining diverse support when it eventually comes before the UN Committee.
