June 24, 1943. Macdonnell reports that the Soviet press reflects Soviet government opinion, and in recent months both had shown an increasingly favourable evaluation of the Allied war effort. Macdonnell contended that this was both a sign of renewed Soviet confidence on the world stage and a genuine appreciation of the Western allies. Naturally, Canada had an interest in furthering this improvement in relations. Increased Soviet confidence in their own strength, and increased trust in their allies, was a reason for optimism and for Canada to focus on cultivating warm relations.
