6 December 1945

December 6, 1945. Lester B. Pearson, under his moniker “Mike,” here responded to Wilgress’ dispatch No. 462 of November 14. Pearson was serving as the Canadian Ambassador to the United States at the time. Pearson reiterates that Kennan was one of the highest profile members of the American Foreign Service, and his opinions were highly regarded within the Truman administration. Also worthy of note is Pearson’s crisp and amusing reply to Wilgress’ football analogy. Pearson draws on his experience as a football coach at the University of Toronto to protest Wilgress’ “unfairness” in allowing the Anglo-American team two quarterbacks.
