August 24, 1943. At this time in the Second World War, the question of the second front was a key driving force in allied relations. As Wilgress noted previously, the Soviets were disaffected by their allies' refusal to open a second front. The Canadians were acutely aware of Soviet suffering during the war, which was often referred to in the Soviet press. Wilgress ascertains that the Soviets were very clear about the conditions required for future cooperation with the British and Americans. It makes clear that the Canadians recognized a solution to the cyclical hot-cold relations between the Western allies and the Soviets.
