CDAC01779: Telegram from the Canadian Ambassador to the US to External Affairs (October 9, 1956)

This document discusses a Canadian visit to SAC bases in the United States, in which Canadian Ambassador Arnold Heeney notes that “the protection of the strategic deterrent in North America is [...] one of the objectives of Canadian defence policy.” Although the SAC was in charge of its own operations on Canadian soil (with Canadian permission), the RCAF and USAF shared similar military aims. Therefore, the Canadian government had a great incentive to permit American refuelling bases on Canadian soil.
