Key statistics about the republic were accompanied by a survey of the complex history of Ukraine, which had “rarely existed as a complete autonomous state” since the days of Kieven Rus. Particular attention was paid to the devastation of World War Two and the Ukraine famine of 1932-33. Soviet authorities were finally acknowledging the intent and full extent of Stalinist atrocities in Ukraine.
