The next day, militia violence “turned off like a tap” as the UN Security Council delegation arrived in East Timor. Violence was expected to resume almost immediately when they left alter in the day, however. Global pressure was growing, notably from protesters: this situation report highlighted “demonstrations in many parts of the world in support of the East Timorese people and pressing for action to assist them. In Canada, these took place in major cities, [including] one that became quite boisterous right in front of Minster Axworthy's constituency office in Winnipeg. In addition, one of the two East Timorese residing in Canada, Bela Galhos, is engaged in a 24-hour vigil on Parliament Hill.”
