HYDRA CONTROL POSITION
DESIGN AND OPERATING CONCEPTS

U

GENERAL

1.1,

This paper has been produced on behalf of D Comm Eng by CFCS
TS3-3-t2,

1.2,

Drawing 10001 (one sheet) dated 14 June 65 and entitled PROPOSED
OVERALL CIRCUIT SYSTEM is associated with this paper.

2.

CIRCUITS

2*1.1

HYDRA circuits fall into three categories, these are:

2.1.1. ON-STRAD circuits i % e. those circuits which operate to message
transfer concepts (of an automatic and not a manual nature).
Here, a subscriber (one of several to the system) is considered
as being permanently connected into the STRAD and has thus
continually available for his use the storage capacity and functional
logic of the STRAD,
2.1.2. OFF-STRAD(A) circuits i.e. those circuits which operate to circuit
switching concepts. HereK a subscriber (one of several to the
system) is considered as being permanently connected to a
teleprinter exchange available to which are certain radio and cable
trunk facilities.
2.1.3. OFF-STRAD(B) circuits i.e., those circuits which directly terminate
on telegraph machines. These circuits cover point-to-point (or
omnibus) engineering order-wire circuits, and circuits where HYDRA
CONTROL is itself considered to be a subscriber to another but
. external teleprinter exchange system (TELEX),
3.

It is proposed that the -teleprinter exchange dorisole be fabricated
in.its entirety at CFCS using ihe capacity of the CFCS laboratory
and staffi

5i6i

Paragraphs 5.3., 5.4., and 5.5., indicate that a CFCS lab project may
minimise development and production costs of a "one off only"
custom built .item.

. TELEPRINTER EXCHANGE - FACILITIES

6.1,

The functional elements of the teleprinter exchange have been based
on similar design concepts to those of manual telephone exchangest
these elements.are listed and their functions are described as
follows:

6.2.

INTERFACE POSITION

6.2.1.

There w i l l be one INTERFACE POSITION per s u b s c r i b e r t o t h e system.

. OPERATORS' CONTROL LOGIC

6,5,lf

This unit i s equivalent t o the "operatorscord c i r c u i t " in a manual
telephone exchange.

6.5.2,

I t acts as i n t e r f a c e logic between a subscriber or subscribers and
the operator* 1 t e l e p r i n t e r .

6.5.3,

I t s output t o the ops t e l e p r i n t e r receiver i s in the d . c . polar
mode from a 60 + 60 supply.- The t e l e p r i n t e r sender i s however
operated in the d . o . n e u t r a l mode.

6.6,

OPERATOR'S TELEPRINTER

6.6.1.

This is the equivalent of the operators handset in a manual
telephone exchange system.

6.6.2. It is suggested that a CREED MODEL 75 teleprinter be assigned to
\ • this role.
6.6.3. The teleprinter, connected in a "switched simplex" mode with local
V-, . record should be fitted with a 60/75/IOO wpm gear-shift.
6«6,4.

A second CREED MODEL 75 teleprinter, connected to a subs' line
circuit on the exchange should also be made available for the
operators' use,

6.7,

TELEPRINTER CONFERENCE FACILITIES

6,7»1, These facilities permit a maximum of four subscribers to be interconnected for conference purposes,
6.7.2. A Key function allows the operator to monitor and to "talk" into
any conference patch set-up.'
6.7.3. A further key function permits the insertion of a regenerative
repeater into the conference patch should the need for its use
so arise.
6.7.4. As far as is known , teleprinter conference facilities are not
available in the present HiDRA scheme. Their inclusion on the
teleprinter exchange is felt to be a necessary feature, if not
for HYDRA, then for DND use should such facilities be called for by
the Staff.
6.7.5. For background information of teleprinter conference operations
between MOD and the Colonial Office in London to Singapore and to
North Borneo, refer to COMCAIvE REPORT 1963 (RED BOOK)
