Mr. Starnes has received the attached reply dated June 18 from Sir Hugh Stephenson, Chairman of the British JIC, to his letter of May 28 concerning Hydra, You will note that Sir Hugh welcomes an opportunity for'his people to discuss this question in detail with us, and he suggests that Mr. W.J.* Sharpe and Mr. H.K. Robin visit Ottawa for this purpose any time after June 27, At the same time Mr. Sharpe is prepared to conclude details concerning the. provision of crystals in wartime about which we have had previous correspondence. I should be grateful if you would it would be convenient for you to receive so that I in turn can suggest alternative Stephenson through our liaison officer in propose to do this by wire, let me know when these visitors dates to Sir Hugh London. I would I would think that apart from welcoming Messrs. June 18, 1962 Dear John, Thank you for your letter of May 28, 1<?62, about the proposals to harden the Leitrim tape relay centre and introduce an automatic relay system on the Hydra circuits. At this stage, our engineers and communicators are attracted by the idea of the automatic system from some points of view but they foresee a number of problems, some of them difficult, which must be solved before it could be applied to the Hydra • circuits. We shall, therefore, -welcome an opportunity to discuss the whole question in detail before any decisions are taken. 2, We should like to send W.J. Sharpe, our Deputy Director of Communications, and H.K. Robin, Chief Engineer, D.W.S. They will be available any time after Jure 27 and perhaps you will suggest suitable dates. 3. . With regard to your last paragraph about provision of crystals in wartime, I suggest that Sharpe should take the opportunity to conclude details during his visit,.
