Qpmposltlon of ArmyFrequency List
1.
This memorandum is intended to provide guidance on
the method of preparing the Army frequency list and on tho seal©
of frequencies to be provided.
2.
There are four main classes of frequency requirenent to
be covered:
a. Frequencies for fixed radio links employing high
power static sets;
b» Frequencies for emergency and mobile extensions of
CASS employing AN/GRC~26 sets;
Co Frequencies for training and for survival operations
employing mobile field-»typa sets;
a. Frequencies for low power THF flaid sets and for
radio relay or keying links#
UXJ&JADIO J-INKS
3o
Frequencies must be cleared and internstianally ragister od to provide for fixed radio links covering 24 hour operation over the full solar cycle• Suitable frequency complements for each circuit for 24 hour operation through a complete
solar cycle will be the long-term aim. The scale of circuits
is indicated in the attached wireless diagrams (Annexes 1-6
Inclusive),
,4.
These frequencies must be cleared for J5A1F1 operations
to appropriate power and every effort will be made to use those
frequencies on which the Army already has a useful international
registretloa status.
po
It is important to establish for each of these fraquen«
cies a complete usage and interference history*. Furthermore;,
Signals 30 aust bear in mind the need for frequent use of these
frequencies even when they are not normally required by virtue
of circuits not operating on a 24~hour basis; if frequencies are
not periodically put into use, they will be taken up by other
agencies and thus will lose" their value to the Army*
6S
It is also important to ensure that new assignments by
other countries or agencies are carefully and promptly checked
against our use. Failure to record our position on such nev/
assignments may result in loss or deterioration of our own rights
and registration status0
%
Tha requirements of Signals 2 must be covered by Signals
3c in the same manner as the CASS circuit requirements.
8.
In the frequency list to be published by the directorate,
frequencies for these fixed radio links will be described by the
symbol C A S S / K C .

CASS gK-MSIOM LINKS
9®
Each Command and No 1 Army Signal Squadron has (or will
have) four or six AN/GE,C«26 stations.
10.
These stations will be used for peacetime or emergency
extexisions\of the GASS fixed network or for special exercise or
training"ccnmitments (eg concentrations)„
llo
The power of these sets is such as to require that
be op era tec close to the optimum frequency-. The assignment ss must
be re-£isteied for operation, to specified locations covering up to
500 miles v.;!thin the Coiemand area* In the case of Mo i ^rmy Signal
Squadron the frequencies should be specified to V/innipegj Gakvlllej,
Montreal aid Halifax from Ottawa. The assignment is for Fixed
Service use (not mobile) and should cover .alJFl operation where
possible. Power v/ill. be 300 watts.
12 o
Thef allowing :indicates the general type of complement
required tc? cover links of the indicated distances
a. For a 500-mile (800 km) link for one direction;:

:-

(1) one frequency in either of the bands « &%$<*
7000 kc/s or 7 3 0 Q - 8 W &c/ s
(2) one frequency in either of the bands - $Q(,Q*>
5450 kc/s or 5730-5950 kc/s
(3) one frequency in either of the bands •*>• 25052850 kc/s or 3155-3400 kc/s
.v ./••-'
b0

For a 250 mile (400 km) link for one direction::
(1) one frequency in either of the bands « 50f>0« '
5450 kc/s or 5730-5950 kc/s
(2) one frequency in either of the bands - 18()0<*
2065 kc/s or 2505»285p kc/s or 3155*3400 -ico/s.

13o
Ii> would be desirable to give each Command enough
frequencies, for full duplex operation of two 500«mile links and
two 250-mile links* This would require two frequencies each from
the two highest bands and two from the lowest band* and four each
from the remaining band's, which will be difficult to obtain.. It
is therefore proposed that an attempt be made to clear two frequencies only in each of th© seven bands for each Command*
14 0
Xr, the frequency M s t to be published by' the directorate,,
frequencies for these GaSS extension TJ.nks will be described by the symbol CASS/XTNC
15.
Eech Command has a requirement for frequencies for low*
power mobile sets of the Type 19"and 29 set* / These "sets aro used
for training and exercises, and during survival operations'would
be used in mobile columns assisting Civil Defence„
16 6
In addition certain Commands have recurring requirements
for additional frequencies for concentrations and major exercises
(eg Wainwrlght5 Petawawa and Gagetown) over and above their normal
training and survival operation frequenciess

17•
It is Intended to provide a list of, say, 20 frequencies
for normal training and survival operations, and a further list
of 20 for the concentrations andr-speclal exeroises. The first
group of 20 should be reasonably free of conflict so that they
can be used regularly for training. The seoond list of 20 frequencies should be as free* of conflict as possible but may be of a
lower order of quality since they will be used less frequently.
In each list of 20 frequencies, five should be for 300 watt operation and tha remainder for 25 watts. If more than this quantity
is available or has been shown as needed in the past, the size of
these lists siaould be accordingly increased. These-frequencies
will probably have to be on a non-interference basis in many cases.
180
Frequencies for training and survival operations etc will
be described by the symbol TRG.
Frequencies for VHF Sets, Radio Relay and Keying Links
19o
Arrangements should be made for the use of frequencies
in the 20-70 Mo/s band for "VHF field type sets for trainings exercises, and survival operations. As many conflict-free frequencies as possible should be provided* Some must be capable of use
in urban areas (at least 30-40 frequencies per Cocmiand if
possible) and some in addition should be added for use in major
training areas. These will presumably be on a non-interference
basis under DOT conditions«
20.
Frequencies must be provided for any radio relay sets to
be supplied to field units (eg B70); the numbers to be provided
will depend on the number of sets likely to be issued and Signals
4 advice on this should be obtained. Frequencies for Signals 3
planned radio relay will ultimately be required; plans for these
are not yet firm. Frequencies already supplied for existing radio
relay or keying links must be verified as to status and usability3
and included«
