This is the result in part df the; theory of "terminal k U l " in which the destruction of the offensive warhead for technical reasons is not expected to take place until it is relatively close to the intended target. (It was suggested that in an average situation interception by Spartan of an incoming missile aimed at a USA target would take place 3S0 miles away at an altitude of 100 miles.) It was recognized, however, that it might be desirable later to.place some radars farther north t o increase tracking time.
