To make a long story short, BRYN defected to us in August 1958 while he was serving in the Polish Embassy, Tokyo and then redefected to the Poles in April 1959. At the time of his defection, BRYN stated that on 27 August 1958 he had called the Canadian Military Attache in Japan and had arranged a luncheon for the purpose of defecting. At the luncheon, however, he changed his mind and decided to make his defection contact with U. S. authorities. Subsequent to BRYN's redefection, he was at first treated as a hero in Poland on the basis of his claim that he had been kidnapped. Not long thereafter, the Polish authorities became suspicious that BRYN had returned to Poland as a Western Agent. Accordingly he was arrested and imprisoned and as far as we are aware he remains in prison. Even at this late date, we would be interested in the true facts concerning BRYN's attempted defection to Canadian authorities, because he obviously was less than candid in his associations with U.S. authorities. If JIB does not have full knowledge on this aspect of the case, I will appreciate your advice as to whom I should approach for amplifying details. Sincere Rolfe Ki A Mr. Robert L. I referred this information to the Directorate of Military Intelligence who replied aa follows: The discussions which you refer to with Maj Kanion were probably co-incidental with our discussions on the same subject and since receiving your letter I have contactod Brig II.H. Ross (then Col), our Service Attacho in Tokyo at the time of the defection. All that Brig HOSB is able to recall is that I'r. BJEN, Polish member of the International Control and Supervisory Coamisoion, called at his office and requested an appointment for that day, the meeting to be carried out in the Imperial Hotel. He would'not disclose thCjsubject. At the meeting in the hotel bar, BRYW showed interest in contacting Col. D. Mounteer (at that time the Assistant Military Adviser at the Canadian Delegation in Saigon and at this time visiting Tokyo), but otherwise his talk was non-comnittal. Helther the Brig nor BRYN mentioned anything about defection. Subsequently, Mr. Guy Choquette, who I believe was with the office of the Canadian Trade Commissioner in Hong Kong, advised the Brig that BBYU had evidently been afraid to broach the Subject at the meeting but had gone to the British who had then sent him the U.S. Uabassy. Possibly Mr. Choquette wrote a report at:'|thV which you already have or which could be obtained from the tfepartme^ of External Affairs. BrjLg Ross states he also wrote a report at the time of the event, but I have been unable to find any trace i s f ^ our files.
