1.
Your JIBS 270-2000-3 over JIBS 735-20C0-1 dated
1 Nov 61 refers the Polish defector, Jerzy BRYN.
2.
The discussions which you refer to with Maj Manion
were probably coincidental with our discussions on the same
subject and since receiving your letter I have contacted
Brig NH Ross(then Col), our Service Attache in Tokyo at the
time of the defection. All that Brig Ross is able to
recall is that Mr BRYN, Polish member of the International
Control and Supervisory Commission, called at his office
and requested an appointment for that day, the meeting to
be carried out in the Imperial Hotel. He would not disclose
the subject. At the meeting in the hotel bar BRYN showed
interest in contacting Col D Mounteer(at that time the
Assistant Military Adviser at the Canadian Delegation in
Saigon and at this time visiting Tokyo), but otherwise his
talk was non-committal. Neither the Brig nor BRYN mentioned
anything about defection.
3.
Subsequently, Mr Guy Choquette, who I believe was
with the office of the Canadian Trade Commissioner in Hong
Kong, advised the Brig that BRYN had evidently been afraid
to broach the subject at the meeting but had gone to the
British who had then sent him to the US Embassy. Possibly
Mr Choquette wrote a report at the time which you already
have or which could be obtained from the Department of
External Affairs. Brig Ross states he also wrote a report
at the time of the event but I have been unable to find
any trace of it on our files.

4.
Col Mounteer is now the Director of Ordnance Services
at AHQ. Last Jul or Aug he discussed the BRYN case with me
at which time I contacted you. He is unable to shed any
further light on the matter but if you think it useful could
be contacted at 2-5970. It seems that there is little can
be added to the information you already have on this subject
but these few additional details may be of 3om^*fl\erest to
yourselves end CIA.
