In addi tion, as part of C anada*s contri buti on to the 2 U nited N ations, an agreem ent w as m ade w ith C anadian Pacifi c Ai r l i nes to carry, each m onth, 600 passengers eastbound and 400 passengers w estbound on 12 fl i ghts from . Vancouver to Tokyo and 8 fl i ghts from Tokyo to Vancouver, at a cost of #2,063,188 from July 1950 to M arch 31,1951. In the fi scalyear 1951-52 the cost w as #4,217,039, w hich declined steadi l y each year to approxim ately #3,040,000 for 1954-55. 3 By January 1951, the urgency associated w ith the ai rl i f t had begun to dim inish and the R CAF com m itm ent w as therefore reduced by 50$, to approxim ately 15 tri ps per m onth. O perations continued at thi s rate unti l June 1952, w hen R CAF fl i ghts w ere again reduced, on thi s occasion to 8 tri ps per m onth. 4 In Apri l 1954, the M i l i tary Ai r Transport Service of the U nited States Ai r Force w ithdrew the support for Shem ya as a base. This did not m ateri al l y affect C PA’ s operations i n D G 6B*s; how ever, i tm eant that N orth Stars w ithout Shem ya could not operate w ith . safety over the N orthern route nor w ith econom y over the Southern route, so the R C AF w ithdrew from the Korean ai rl i f t , fl yi ng the l ast f l i ght i n June of l ast year. 5 M eanw hile, CPA continued operating,but al teri ng i t s fl i ghts to three w estbound and tw o eastbound each w eek, follow ing the decision to reduce ground forces i n Korea. 6 By agreem ent, the C anadian com m ercial (C PA) ai rl i f t con tri buti on to the U nited N ations w as and i s controlled by-M ATS, w ith a passenger space al l ocati on of 300 to C anada and the rem ainder to the U nited States The C anadian Arm y requirem ent has recently fal l en off and w i l lcontinue to do so as follow s: a) January - 130 passengers b) February - 130 passengers c) M arch 100 passengers(anticipated) (d) Apri land thereafter - 64 7 The anticipated Arm y requirem ent after Apri l1, 1955, wi l lf al lto 32 passengers each w ay, 1000 lbs of supplies w est bound, 200 lbs of supplies eastbound and 2000 lbs of m ail each w ay, per m onth. Although this m ethod w ould probably be m ore costly than chartered fl i ghts i tw ould be m uch m ore effi ci ent from a supply-m anpow er point of view . 9 I t . i s, therefore, recom m ended that the Arm y Korean ai rl i f trequirem ent after April 1, 1955, be m et by uti l i zi ng norm al com m ercial scheduled fl i ghts, and that the agreem ent w ith C anadian Pacific Airli nes, w hich term inates M arch 31, 1955, be not renew ed.
