Department of National Defence

Apri 1 14 1 19Jl.
"A0R" W/T Case.
1.

You may recall that s0112 •eks ago when MaJor General
Beaumont-Nesbitt
and Brigadier
Letson were in Ottawa we
discussed in your ottice the matter ot the amateur rireless
station in Boston which we had been watching t<r the War Ottice.

2.

I then er:pressed concern to General Nesbitt that this
station,
vbich we had been advised was being operated by the
F.B.I.,
was sending information
t.o Gc-mmy llhioh, so tar as
convoy sailings
was concerned, was much too accurate tor .
comto~.

3.

There is a great deal ot lJ!.1Stery surrounding this station,
and I am not altogether
satisfied
that deceptions
are being
played on the Germns.
The more I think ot it the more I am
coming to the conclusion that the moe is on the other toot~
At all events, I consider it to be absolutely
desirable
that since ooth the R.C.M.P. and the Navy (through the R.C.M.P.)
are in possession
ot the cipher 'ltlich that station
uses, we,
Whose Job it is to monitor the station tar both the Navy and tbe
R.C.M.P. (AND the War Office),
should have the cipher also.

/4.

-

It is asked that autbarity
be given me to ask that the
appropriate
otticer
ot the R.C.M.P. be asked to make this
cipher available
to our Intelligence
Officer at the Experimental
Wireless Station,
so that • DIIYhave an equal opportunity to
ponder the uses ot this station
and present our views on it.

6.

The v.bole procedure regarding the Boston station
tills
112
w1th great misgiving.
And I am as sured that the Navy are also
feeling 'V8ry restive
about it now. -
