2.
r. Henry w a
ked what purpose he
thought the Soviet Union ight have had in shooting
down th Sw dish plan in th Baltic; wheth r,
for exa pl,
th Soviet Union hoped to derives
e
ort of political
advantage from such n act.
Mr. Henry discount d th po sibility
that the
incident had been manufactured by th Sovi t Governent for the purpose of exerting pressure on Sw d n.
It this were the case, th move had c rtainly
b ckfired inasmuch a the Swedish population had reacted
very trongly to th att ck and indignation
against
the Sovi t Union was sweeping the country.
r. Henry
thought it or likely that the plane had been shot
down by "trigg r•bapp ", over-conac1ent1oua
pilots
who prob bly thought that the Sw dish plane was
pproaching too clo ly to Soviet territory
or to
th are of Soviet naval mano uvres.
Be recalled
the
incid nt of the Sov1 t plane downed in the Yellow Sea
about a year and a halt ago. H revealed that two
Sovi t pl nee wer ae n flying towards a Unit d
ations task force.
On was shot down, as a purely
precautionary
mov, wh nit was considered to have
ppro ched too close. whereupon the other plane
turned back.
The d cialon to shot was probably
t ken by an offio r not higher than the rank of Commander.
r. Henry ssumed that somewhat an logous
oircumstan e probably held in th ca e ot the Swedish
plane.
At ny rate, the end result of th r cent
incident,
Yr. Henry said, had certainly
been to the
di dvant e of the Sov et Union in view of the anger
aroused by its action in Sweden. We referred at
