from Reinhardt.
Following statement by General Ridgway in response URTEL731 to
Moscow, rptd Paris 4919, London 6260, Ottawa 189, Bonn 4627:
•1. Following summarizes info presently
available to me on
reported interception
of Soviet C-47 type aircraft
by Canadian F-86
aircraft
on 19 March, with source of info.
2. a. General Norstad reports to me that Soviet aircraft
on
previously authorized flight was approximately one hour and fifty
minutes behind reported flight plans, that it was intercepted
by
two Canadton • F-86's acting in accordance with orders, that the "passes" I
made by the 86's were identification,
did.not rpt not in any way
'
jeopardize the Soviet aircraft,
that no rpt no warning shots were
fired, no rapt no provocative action taken.
b. General Norstad further reports that the Soviet pilot
reported by radio to tower with which he was then working the
presence of 86's and requested they be withdrawn.
Pilot did not
rapt not allege any improper action by 86's.
c.

86's were withdrawn.

3. I consider this interception
normal, proper and essential,
if we are to minimize danger of hostile aircraft
in this area.
Any
aircraft,
US or foreign, as much behind schedule as this can expect
to be intercepted
for identification
purposes.
My own plane would
be similarly
intercepted,
I hope, under like circumstances.

I request
