CONFIDENTIAL

June 9, 1953
MEMORANDUM FOR MR.

HOF

NATO

Exercize "Mariner”
in a report on a liaison visit to SACLANT*s
HQ on May 19, 1953, CJS, Washington reports in part:
The UK has not agreed to the command
arrangements in the IBERLANT area for Exercize
"Mariner” and that part of the exercize involving
this command has therefore been cancelled.

SACLANT*s communications division is still
hoping to obtain Canadian authority for SACLANT
transmissions between Norfolk and Halifax of low
classification on Canadian landlines in connection
with Exercize "Mariner”.

After a SACLANT briefing meeting held on
2,
June 4, CJS, Washington reported:
A conference is being held in Paris on
July 22 and 23 under the chairmanship of Admiral
Hoffman, COS SACLANT, to firm up schedules of the
1954 exercizes and to develop the concept and
outline of the large exercize (similar to "Mariner")
to take place in fall of 1954.
