DATE

October 19, 1970.
The Prime Minister's Conversation
with President Nixon
At approximately 4:35 p.m. on October 18
President Nixon called Prime Minister Trudeau. He
reached him at the office of Prime Minister Bourassa
on the 17th floor of the Hydro-Quebec Building in
Montreal. They spoke for about ten minutes. The
President told the Prime Minister that he felt he had
taken the right line in dealing with the terrorists
and in fact that he had no choice. The President
viewed the incident as part of a world-wide phenomenon
which included a hijacking in the Soviet Union. It
should not be viewed as an isolated incident which
reflected only Canadian conditions. The President
said he fully supported the Canadian Government and
asked the Prime Minister to express his deepest
sympathy to Mrs. Laporte. He told the Prime Minister
that he would have no objection if the Prime Minister
wished to inform the news media of his call.
