Op Apollo : Land Forces to Afghanistan

SECRET

The formal approval from CENTCOM to the Land Component Commander (CFLCC) for the
deployment of Canadian Forces for Op Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan was received at 2000
hrs Sat 5 January. In the message, CINC CENTCOM confirms that the forces are required no
later than 15 February, and on their arrival in the CENTCOM area of responsibility, relinquishes
OPCON (operational control) to the CFLCC Commander, LtGen Paul Mikolashek. (Mikolashek is
based out of Camp Doha, Kuwait).
2. An amendment to the RFF has also been received from CFLCC, which adds the infantry
recce and pioneer platoons to the Infantry Battalion elements and Armoured Recce Squadron
(minus) on the list of requested forces. As with the earlier version, the RFF specifies that these
forces will be part of "Task Force Rakkasan" (187th Regiment), and will perform "combat and
combat support operations" as directed by the Commander TF Rakkasan: specifically, security,
sensitive site exploration, support to humanitarian operations at Qandahar airfield, and conduct of
combat operations to destroy Al Qaida and Taliban forces.

3. CFLCC planning is currently focussing on the Khowst/Gardez regions, where between 700
and 2100 Al Qaida and Taliban forces are believed to remain. The CFLCC apparently is very
anxious to deploy the CF elements into Qandahar as soon as possible, particularly the Armoured
Recce Squadron (-), and may push for an even earlier deployment than 15 Feb. The JTFSWA
staff in Tampa are working very closely with NDHQ to get the recce and advance party out to
Kuwait and Qandahar as soon as possible.
4. That this deployment is taking place at all is due entirely to the hard work of the CF liaison
officer at CFLCC Kuwait and the persistence of the JTFSWA Commander and staff here in
Tampa. They saw an opportunity, and pursued it - while at the same time, the message with
regard to the need to continue to incorporate Coalition forces into the Op Enduring Freedom
campaign was being heard at CENTCOM.
