INFORMATION ON IRBM WHICH IS PROPOSED FOR EMPLOYMENT BY NATO FORCES
PARA 2 THE FOLLOWING DATA ON IRBM HAS BEEN RELEASED TO SACEUR BY THE
UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT AND IS BEING FURNISHED YOU ON A NEEDTO-KNOW BASIS FOR YOUR INFORMATION AND PLANNING ONLY.
A. GENERAL OPERATIONAL EMPLOYMENT. AN IRBM SQUADRON WILL BE EQUIPPED
WITH 15 OPERATIONAL MISSILES AND ORGANIZED TO OPERATE 24 HOURS A
DAY, 7 DAYS A WEEK. EACH SQUADRON WILL REQUIRE 5 LAUNCH POSITIONS.
B. LAUNCH POSITION.,, EACH LAUNCH POSITION REQUIRES APPROXIMATELY
60 ACRES, INCLUDING AREA FOR ACCESS ROADS AND SAFETY CLEARANCES.
C. PERSONNEL. APPROXIMATELY 500 PERSONNEL ARE REQUIRED TO MAN EACH
SQUADRON. APPROXIMATELY HALF OF THESE PERSONNEL MUST BE TECHNICALLY
QUALIFIED. D. ESTIMATED COSTS OF AN IRBM SQUADRON. 15 MISSILES
WITH ALL SUPPORT EQUIPMENT 38 MILLION DOLLARS. ALL SPARES FOR
FIRST YEAR 4 MILLION DOLLARS. INITIAL TRAINING 4 MILLION DOLLARS.
CONSTRUCTION OF TECHNICAL FACILITIES (DOES NOT INCLUDE HARDENING
OF SITES-TO REDUCE VULNERABILITY-WHICH SHOULD BE UNDERTAKEN AS
SOON AS POSIBLE) 1.5 TO 2 MILLION DOLLARS. TOTAL 47.5 TO 48
MILLION DOLLARS. ALL SPARES FOR EACH YEAR AFTER THE .FIRST YEAR
