The following information, togethe¥r'w_th--the •attached photographs, furnishes a general description of those v/eapons which the U.S. Representative to the North Atlantic Council recently stated were included among the-., new weapons programmed under U.S. Military Assistance Programs for delivery to certain NATO nations. Additional and more precise information will be furnished on a "need-to-know" basis through the U.S. Military Assistance Groups in the various nations concerned. NIKE GUIDED MISSILE 2. Figure 1 is a photograph of the NIKE surface-to-air guided missile. It has been operational in the US Army for a number of years. It is capable of engaging any aircraft or aerodynamically supported missile which is known in service today. 3» The basic NIKE unit is a battalion of four batteries, each battery consisting of a number of launchers like those shown in the photograph. Battery equipment costs several million dollars, exclusive of the cost of the missiles themselves. A battery installation requires about 200 acres of land, although the major portion of this area is for safety zones and much of the land can be utilized for agricultural purposes. HONEST JOHN •+. Figure 2 is a photograph of the Honest John. It is a ground-to-ground free-flight ballistic missile utilized for support of ground forces. It employs either conventional dr atomic warheads. 5. As the picture indicates, the launcher is truck-mounted. It accompanies tactical units in the field, filling a role normally associated with Corps Artillery. The equipment requires no special fixed installations or land areas. MATADOR 6. Figure 3 is a photograph of the MATADOR. It is a pilotless bomber capable of carrying either a conventional or an atomic warhead for several hundred miles. As the photograph indicates, the Matador is launched from a semi-trailer. It therefore requires no runways, but it does require shelters for assembly and component test. ATOMIC CONVERSION KITS 7. The atomic conversion kit is designed for certain fighter-bomber aircraft and consists of those electronic devices, special pylon, and fittings, which will give the aircraft the capability of carrying and delivering nuclear weapons. The equipment can be installed on the aircraft either in production or after delivery to a tactical unit. ..
