SUBJECT:

Meeting'with 'Mr 7'Escbtt'Held'to" discuss Departmental
paper.P.?. . national security policy

You mentioned that you would like to take
advantage of Mr. Reid's presence in Ottawa to have a
meeting in your office to discuss the paper "Strategic
Concept of the Nuclear Deterrent" with a view to its
revision.
2.
As you know, Mr. Reid will be in Ottawa from
July 5 to 8, and I should like to know what time would
be convenient for you to have such a meeting. According
to Mr. Reid's time-table, I gather that the afternoon of
July 6 or the morning of July 7 are free, and also July 8.
3.
I suggest that, in addition to Mr. Reid,
the following might be asked to attend if they are in
Ottawa: Dr. MacKay, Mr. Wershof, Mr. Chapdelalne, Mr.
Ford, Mr. Cadieux, Mr. Crean, Mr. Smith, and Mr. Teakles.

•

4.
I wonder if you would agree to having a
record made of the discussion to facilitate the revision
of the paper. If so, I would suggest that Mr. Brown of
this Division might attend to make such a record.
