Atomic Warheads - Removal for Maintenance
1
As a result of your request for information regarding
the probable number of nuolear warheads for the RCAF Bomarc Sqns
and CF-101B Sqns whioh it may be necessary to transport to the
US for maintenance in a given period of time, CJS (W) has eupplied
the following general information.
2
On acoount of the safety which is necessary, the
reliability whioh is intrinsically designed into the warhead, is
extremely high, and henoe the maintenance required is relatively
small.
3
Two types of maintenance ohecks are carried out in
addition to the regular maintenance by the Sqn. The first type
of check is one directed by the US authorities on a random basis
through the TTs communications facilities which exist. Any faults
found on this type of inspection are usually oorreoted by the Sqn
personnel, and if the correction is beyond the ability of the Sqn
personnel, a Depot team is sent from the US to perform the
rectification. In addition to this randcm checking, a regular
formal Ad Hoc maintenance team visit is made at least onoe every
six months for the purpose of inspecting the warheads and providing
modification, alteration, and quality assurance as required.
4
Almost all of this work is performed by field operations,
hence there is very little movement of warheads back to the U S . It
is estimated that not more than five warheads per year will be
required to be transported to the US from the Bomarc and CF-101 sites
during normal conditions.
